EPISODE 0056 | Competence Is Your Confidence
THESE NOTES ACCOMPANY EPISODE 0056
We all want to be effective leaders, but how do we truly build competency and confidence in what we do? In this episode, Pastor Stephen explains that competency is more than just talent—it’s the combination of knowledge, skills, and personal growth that enables us to lead with real impact. Through the examples of Biblical leaders like Saul and David, we see how solving problems, working with excellence, and building strong teams can take us from where we are to where God wants us to be. Building your competency ultimately leads to greater confidence in your calling and leadership journey.
Competency is defined as the combination of observable and measurable knowledge, skills, abilities and personal attributes that contribute to performance and success.
Ignorant is the opposite of knowledgeable. Ignorance is not knowing what you don’t know.
Incompetence is the opposite of competence. Incompetence is not knowing what you should know.
Two Types of Leaders
1. King Saul
1 Samuel 9:2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
2. King David: Doesn’t look like a king at all. He was a shepherd boy.
I Samuel 16:11 So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives."
How were they different?
Saul was discovered by People. David was hidden by God.
Saul was what the people wanted. David was what the people needed.
Acts 13:22 But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’
We can learn a great deal about competency from David. God blessed Israel under his care – Solomon’s blessings were on the foundation of His Father David.
What does the Bible say about his leadership?
Psalm 78:72 He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands.
1. Heart – another translation says integrity of Heart – Integrity & Heart – David had Character and Calling.
2. Hands – David was a competent leader – He lead skillfully.
