EPISODE 0055 | Calling Is Your Motivation
THESE NOTES ACCOMPANY EPISODE 0055
We are all building something—the question is what, how, and will it last? Calling is all about what we are building with our life. In this episode, Pastor Stephen unpacks the key callings every Christian has, and how these callings are interconnected and vital for leading a life of purpose and effectiveness.
Building God’s Way
1. God created you to build. It isn’t a matter of if you’re a builder, You are. The question: what are you building and how are you building it.
Example: People say, I’m not a leader, yes you are. Someone is watching what you’re doing and you are doing or building something.
2. God wants you to build something that’s lasts. Not everything built, is built to last. God wants your life to matter and wants to use you to make an eternal difference in the lives of people.
3. God gives you the Bible as a blueprint.
Calling is defined as a strong urge toward a particular way of life or career; a vocation.
BIG IDEA: If Character produces accountability. Calling produces Effectiveness.
Effectiveness vs. faithfulness. But your life is meant to get stuff done and to accomplish great things! That’s what calling is all about! The word for effectiveness in the bible is the word Fruitful.
Three Callings of a Christian:
1. You’re called to follow Jesus.
You’re effective as a Christian when you remain in Jesus.
John 15:4 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.
2. You’re called to a local church.
The Church is the vehicle by which God grows and matures us in our faith. It’s where we live out and practice: the goal is unity of faith and maturity in Christ - EPH 4. Two metaphors to describe the church.
● The Church is a FAMILY. Born into family.
We operate primarily on the basis of relationships, not rules.
1 Timothy 5:1-2 Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
● The Church is a BODY. Grow and discover your place.
We are a body, not a business. Therefore, we function on the basis of spiritual gifts and character.
I Corinthians 12:27 27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.
3. You’re Called to make a difference in your vocation. (to live on mission with our lives)
● God created you to fix problems and do good things.
Ephesians 2:10 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
● You do whatever you do as if you were working for Jesus.
Colossians 3:23-24 23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 24 Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.
