EPISODE 0004 | FATHERS AS KINGS

THESE NOTES ACCOMPANY EPISODE 0004

In Scripture, we see only one king that we are told is after God’s own heart, and that is the kind of king fathers are called to be like. In today’s episode, Pastor Stephen discusses the third mantle of fathers, the Mantle of King, and the responsibilities of fathers to protect, conquer, and build within their families. Drawing lessons from Saul, Solomon, and David, Pastor Stephen explores the different leadership styles and outcomes of these kings to illustrate what it means to be a Godly father who leads his family with wisdom and strength.

SHOW NOTES:

Three Kings – 2 Bad, 1 Good.

1.   King Saul

1 Samuel 9:2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

 2.   King Solomon

1 Kings 11:1-4 (NLT) 1 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh’s daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites. 2 The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel, “You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.” Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway. 3 He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the Lord. 4 In Solomon’s old age, they turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the Lord his God, as his father, David, had been.

3.    King David

I Samuel 16:11 So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives."

How were they different.

  • Saul was co-dependent.

  • Solomon was independent.

  • David was interdependent

  • Saul was discovered by people. David was hidden by God.

  • Saul was what the people wanted. David was what the people needed.

  •  Solomon was led astray by wealth and power. David saw His power as God’s power.

KING DAVID IS THE MODEL. JESUS WOULD COME THROUGH HIS LINEAGE.

Acts 13:22 But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’

Psalm 78:72 He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands

Competence is all about work. Work is all about solving problems.

Some Biblical Ideas About Father’s As Kings

1.   Father’s were created to work.

Genesis 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Genesis 2:2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

2.   Competence precedes success.

Genesis 41:14-15 The king sent for Joseph, and he was immediately brought from the prison. After he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came into the king's presence. 15 The king said to him, “I have had a dream, and no one can explain it. I have been told that you can interpret dreams.”

3.   Work will continue in the new heaven and new earth.

Genesis 1:28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

4.   Our work prepares us to reign with Jesus.

2 Timothy 2:10-13 So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen. 11 This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him, we will also live with him. 12 If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.

BIG IDEA – Competency produces confidence.

Three Jobs of Fathers as Kings

1.   Kings protect.

2.   Kings Conquer.

3.   Kings Build.

Three Negative Responses to Pressure

 1.   We get lost in confusion.

When Working…

1.   Do it.

2.   Do it right.

3.   Do it right now.

2.   We withdraw and isolate.

When relating…

1.   Be Loyal.

2.   Be Considerate.

3.   Be Forgiving.

3. We overreact or under react.

When Working…

1.   Live by the Calendar.

2.   Frontload the Week.

3.   Keep Lists.

4.   Work to Rest.

Pressure doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are.

How does God Use Pressure?

1.    To demonstrate His power.

2.    To grow our faith in Him.

3.    To mature and prepare us for more.
