EPISODE 0003 | FATHERS AS PRIESTS

THESE NOTES ACCOMPANY EPISODE 0003

There is a lie that exists in our world that we can love people better than God and that all our children need is to be loved and affirmed. The truth is, a good father makes it clear to his children that there is only one way to live in their house: God’s way. In today’s episode, Pastor Stephen discusses the Mantle of Priests given to fathers, and the responsibility a father has to minister to his family and continually point them back to God and His commands.

SHOW NOTES:

How Children Should Honor Their Parents

1.   By respecting their position.

Ephesians 6:2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise:

 2.   By submitting to their authority.

Luke 2:51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.

Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

3.   By accepting their discipline.

Proverbs 12:1 To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction.

5 Biblical Principles About Raising Children

1.   Fathers must think and act generationally.

Genesis 1:27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.

2.   A father’s relationship with God is the catalyst to their children knowing God.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

3.   Father’s must be intentional about training their children.

Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

Training from Proverbs:

1.   Train them to manage God’s money. (Prov. 3:9-10)

2.   Train them to carefully select friends. (Prov. 13:20)

3.   Train them to watch their words. (Prov. 4:24)

4.   Train them to be responsible. (Prov. 6:6-8)

5.   Train them to guard their minds. (Prov. 23:7)

6.   Train them to be generous. (Prov. 11: 25)

7.   Train them to fear God.  (Prov. 1:7)

4.   Training my children will require that I discipline my children.

Proverbs 13:24 Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

Proverbs 22:8 (ESV) Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of his fury will fail.

1 John 4:8 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Biblical discipline isn’t done in anger and doesn’t produce fear in our children.

A Few Thoughts On Discipline:

  • Discipline is most effective when children are young.

  • Do not discipline in anger.

  • Make consequences very clear and consistent.

Hebrews 12:9-11 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

5.   My greatest accomplishment is that my children know and serve God.

Mark 8:36 36 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
