What is the Divine Council?
Definition: A heavenly assembly of divine beings who serve in Yahweh’s administration.

The Divine Council and Creation \
Psalm 82: Depicts God presiding over the divine assembly/council.

Psalm 82:1–8 (LEB) A psalm of Asaph. God stands in the divine assembly; he administers judgment in the midst of the gods. “How long will you judge unjustly and show favoritism to the wicked? Selah Judge on behalf of the helpless and the orphan; provide justice to the afflicted and the poor. Rescue the helpless and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” They do not know or consider. They go about in the darkness, so that all the foundations of the earth are shaken. I have said, “You are gods, and sons of the Most High, all of you. However, you will die like men, and you will fall like one of the princes.” Rise up, O God, judge the earth, because you shall inherit all the nations.

Genesis 1:26 (“Let Us Make Man in Our Image”): Discuss the plural pronoun “us” as an indication of the Divine Council’s presence during creation.
• Talking Point: The “us” refers to a heavenly assembly of divine beings participating in the creative process.

Nature of the Divine Council: Explore the concept of the Divine Council, its members, and its role in the heavenly hierarchy.
• Scriptural References:
Job 38:4-7: Mentions “sons of God” shouting for joy during creation. • 1 Kings 22:19-23: Micaiah’s vision of the Lord’s throne room.

Daniel 7:9-10: Daniel’s vision of the Ancient of Days and the heavenly court.
Revelation 4-5: John’s vision of the heavenly throne room and the Lamb.

• Biblical references: I’m going to quote a lot from the LEB – Lexham English Bible – primarily because they don’t shy away from using the Sacred Name of Yahweh, and sometimes as you read the text, when you see Yahweh as opposed to just “The Lord” it can help distinguish some of what is being described.

YHWH is what is actually in the Hebrew text...

Psalm 89:6–8 (LEB) For who in the sky is equal to Yahweh? Who is like Yahweh among the sons of God, a God feared greatly in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all surrounding him? O Yahweh God of hosts, who is mighty like you, O Yah, with your faithfulness surrounding you? These point to the incomparability of Yahweh... “There is not beside me” God of gods, Lord of Lords....

God is not being compared to cartoons... he’s being compared to other spiritual beings.

So we see this sort of idea of heavenly Hosts and Heavenly Court throughout scripture but it’s amazing to me how many people who read the bible never pause to ponder what that is...

Yahweh is an Elohim, but not all Elohim is Yahweh.
Elohim is a word describing attributes and place of residence.

When Samual dies and then Soul conjures him up (1 Sam 28) – which is another crazy supernatural story – Saul is called an Elohim

Who are the Members of the Divine Council?

  • Yahweh (The Most High Elohim)
o Deuteronomy 4:19, 10:17 – The Most High rules over the gods.

  • The Sons of God (Bené Elohim)
o Divine beings who serve in God’s court.
o Some of these rebelled (Genesis 6, Psalm 82, Revelation 12).

  • The Seraphim and Cherubim
    o Seraphim (Isaiah 6:2-6) – Fiery, serpent-like beings.
    o Cherubim (Ezekiel 1:5-14) – Four-faced throne guardians.

  • Angelic Messengers (Malakim)

o Deliver God’s messages (Gabriel in Luke 1, Michael in Daniel 10).

  • Satan (The Adversary)

  • Job 1-2 – Satan appears in the Divine Council as a prosecutor.

  • Zechariah 3:1-2 – Satan accuses the high priest before Yahweh.
