EPISODE 0099 | Helmet of Salvation
THESE NOTES ACCOMPANY EPISODE 0099
Our identity in Christ is the foundation of our confidence in the spiritual battle. In this episode, we explore the Helmet of Salvation, a critical piece of the armor of God that protects our minds and secures our confidence in Christ’s finished work. Learn how to stand firm in your salvation, overcome the lies of the enemy, and walk in the freedom Christ has provided—past, present, and future.
Characteristics of the Roman Helmet
· It was the most noticeable piece of armor. (the breastplate was the most beautiful but the helmet stood out.)
· It was etched with designs. These designs would relate to what they were fighting for. Would remind them of home.
Example: Deployed soldier with picture of family in helmet or a set of dog tags. Helmet would give away where they were from.
· It was fashioned in the shape of animals at times. To stand out and intimidate.
· It had horse hair or feathers on top. Like a tom Turkey, stuck out. Aggressive and intimidating.
· It was connected to the individual Roman identity. Not just as a soldier but as a person.
· It was bronze and heavy. Had a sponge like material so it could be worn.
Confidence is a big deal in a fight.
The helmet of salvation is a symbol of our identity in Christ.
Our Freedom in Christ is Three-Fold:
1. Freedom From The Past (Justification)
We are justified or freed from the penalty of all sin. past, present & future. It is finished.
2. Freedom For The Present (Sanctification)
We are sanctified or being set free in the present from the effects of our sin. The Prison of sin and the snare of sin. Jesus came to set the captives free. This process continues throughout life and is the subject of this course. We are being set free, it is an active and ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
3. Freedom In The Future (Glorification)
One day we will be glorified and experience freedom from the presence of Sin. John 14:3. Revelation 21: 1-7, Philippians 4:13
How does this work:
We are saved, we are being saved and we will be saved.
Jesus + Nothing = Everything
The same power that raised Jesus from the death, justified you for the penalty of sin, sanctifies you from the effects of sin and will glorify you from the presence of sin.
Four Looks:
1. The backward look. – this focuses on the past instead of Jesus. Your past doesn’t define you but God wants to redeem it.
2. The inward look. – This look is all about yourself and what you can do with your own hands. It will be tempting to work hard for God instead of abide in Christ.
3. The outward look. – looks at your circumstances. This can be discouraging. We want to go fast and we are tempted to take shortcuts.
4. The surrender look. – This is all about Jesus.
