EPISODE 0080 | 4 Attitudes Of Learning
THESE NOTES ACCOMPANY EPISODE 0080
The attitude of a learner determines the progress of their growth. In this episode, we explore the four attitudes of a learner. By cultivating these attitudes, we can grow closer to God, embrace humility as Christ did, press forward in progress, and apply what we learn to our lives. True transformation comes not just from gaining knowledge but from putting it into action.
4 Attitudes of Learning
1. An Attitude of Relationship – The purpose of discipleship is to grow closer to God and to each other.
Ephesians 4:11-13: Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.
The purpose is unity and maturity. So the body maybe be built up. It is about relationship – Closer to God closer to each other.
The dangers of legalism – Pharisees – missed God even though they had knowledge.
2. An Attitude of Humility – This can be hard for many reasons: Prior experiences, Preconceived notions. Family of origin. You have to put on humility – you don’t come with it. We must choose humility!
Philippians 2:5-9: You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,
If Jesus humbled himself, we should too. How does humility work for us:
1 Peter 5:5-6: In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.
Peter knew the power of humility, remember Peter? Drawing the sword, I’ll never leave you, I’m awesome... He learned that God was awesome.
Grace says you’re not as bad as you think you are but you also aren’t as good as you think you are.
3. An Attitude of Progress – This attitude says there is always something new to learn. I’m not striving for perfection but progress.
Philippians 3:13-14: No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
This one thing, I haven’t arrived but I’m getting closer every day.
4. An Attitude of Discipline – This is all about application. Learners aren’t just in it for information or to know more
James 1:23-15: For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
At the end of the day, it is doing what God says that changes our life, we have to be implementers of what we learn.
